What Does Radiator Repair Involve?

Radiator repair covers all work on individual or multiple radiators in a central heating system — from bleeding and balancing to full radiator replacement and system power flushing. Kamdem HomeTech provides: radiator bleeding (removing trapped air that causes cold spots at the top of a radiator); radiator balancing (adjusting flow to each radiator to ensure even heat distribution throughout the property); thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) replacement; lockshield valve replacement; radiator removal and replacement; new radiator installation; and power flushing to clear sludge and magnetite from the radiator interior.

We carry radiators in a range of standard sizes and can usually supply and fit a replacement radiator in a single visit. For unusual sizes or designer radiators, we work from the customer's specification and supply within 2–3 working days. All radiator work is carried out by qualified engineers who understand the relationship between individual radiator performance and whole-system heating efficiency — ensuring any intervention improves the whole system rather than creating imbalances elsewhere.

What Happens When You Delay?

A radiator with cold spots, or one that is completely cold despite the heating being on, is not just a comfort problem. It signals a system imbalance or sludge accumulation that is placing additional strain on the boiler and circulation pump. A pump working harder to compensate for blocked or unbalanced radiators consumes more electricity and wears out faster.

Sludge accumulation that causes cold spots in one or two radiators will — if untreated — progressively affect the whole system. What begins as a single cold radiator becomes a system-wide efficiency problem, elevated running costs, and eventually a blocked heat exchanger in the boiler — a significantly more expensive problem than a power flush carried out at the right time. Address radiator faults promptly to protect the whole system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my radiator cold at the top but hot at the bottom?
A radiator that is cold at the top but hot at the bottom has trapped air in the upper section, preventing hot water from filling the whole radiator. Bleeding the radiator — releasing the trapped air through the bleed valve — resolves this immediately.
Why is my radiator cold at the bottom but hot at the top?
Cold at the bottom of a radiator — particularly in a pattern that does not improve after bleeding — indicates sludge (magnetite) accumulation in the lower section of the radiator. This requires chemical flushing of the individual radiator or, for severe cases, power flushing of the whole system.
How do I bleed a radiator?
Use a radiator bleed key to slowly open the bleed valve (at the top corner of the radiator). Hold a cloth underneath. When the hissing sound of air stops and water begins to drip, close the valve. Check and re-pressurise the boiler if the pressure gauge has dropped below 1 bar. If you are unsure, call us — it is a quick job for an engineer.
Should I bleed radiators with the heating on or off?
Turn the heating off and allow the system to cool before bleeding radiators — this avoids the risk of scalding from hot water. After bleeding, turn the heating back on and check all radiators are heating evenly.
How much does radiator replacement cost?
Contact us on 07826 088938 for a quote. Costs depend on the radiator size, the valve configuration, and whether new pipework is required. We can usually supply and fit a standard replacement radiator in a single visit.
Can you add a new radiator to an existing central heating system?
Yes. We can add new radiators to an existing central heating system — for extensions, conservatories, or rooms that previously had no radiator. This involves extending the central heating pipework and balancing the new radiator into the system.
What is a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) and should I have one?
A TRV controls the temperature of an individual room by limiting the flow of hot water through that radiator when the room reaches the set temperature. Most modern central heating systems should have TRVs on every radiator except the room where the main thermostat is located — they improve comfort and reduce energy use.
Do you carry out power flushing?
Yes. Power flushing is available for individual radiators and for whole central heating systems. A power flush removes sludge, scale and corrosion products from radiators, pipework and the heat exchanger — restoring system efficiency and protecting the boiler.
