What Does Radiator Repair Involve?

Radiator repair covers all work on individual or multiple radiators within a central heating system โ€” from simple bleeding and balancing to valve replacement, full radiator removal and replacement, and system power flushing. A radiator that is not performing correctly affects not just the room it heats, but the overall efficiency and balance of the central heating system โ€” and in some cases, the lifespan of the boiler.

Kamdem HomeTech provides the following radiator services across Greater Manchester:

  • Radiator bleeding โ€” removing trapped air that causes cold spots at the top of a radiator and reduces its heat output. A common and quick fix for radiators that are warm at the bottom but cold at the top
  • Radiator balancing โ€” systematically adjusting the flow rate through each radiator in the property to achieve even heat distribution. The solution when some rooms are consistently too hot while others remain cold, or when the furthest radiators from the boiler are always the last to heat up
  • Thermostatic Radiator Valve (TRV) replacement โ€” TRVs regulate individual room temperatures; a stuck-open TRV overheats a room and wastes energy, while a stuck-closed TRV leaves the room cold. We replace all major TRV types
  • Lockshield valve replacement โ€” the lockshield valve controls flow balance on each radiator; corroded or failed lockshields cause poor heat distribution
  • Radiator removal โ€” for decorating, maintenance access, or system work; we drain, disconnect, and cap off the radiator safely without draining the whole system in most cases
  • Radiator replacement โ€” supply and fitting of a new radiator in a standard size (which we carry on the van) or to customer specification. Includes draining, fitting, refilling, and bleeding
  • New radiator installation โ€” adding a radiator to a room that currently has none, including pipework connections and commissioning
  • Power flushing โ€” for systems with cold spots at the bottom of radiators caused by sludge (magnetite) settlement; see our central heating page for full power flush details

We carry radiators in common sizes on our vans and can usually supply and fit a replacement in a single visit. For non-standard or designer radiators, we work from the customer's specification and source within 2โ€“3 working days.

What Happens When You Delay?

A single cold radiator is not a standalone problem โ€” it is a symptom of a system-wide issue. Cold spots at the top of a radiator indicate trapped air; a quick bleed resolves it. Cold spots at the bottom indicate sludge settlement โ€” magnetite that has accumulated in the base of the radiator and will continue to accumulate in the rest of the system if not addressed. A completely cold radiator on a system where others are heating normally indicates a valve fault or a severe blockage.

Left unaddressed, sludge accumulation progresses. What starts as cold bottoms on two or three radiators becomes a system-wide efficiency problem โ€” the boiler works harder, runs longer, and consumes more gas to compensate for reduced heat output. The circulation pump strains against the increased flow resistance. Eventually, sludge reaches the heat exchanger in the boiler โ€” clogging the narrow channels, reducing efficiency dramatically, and accelerating corrosion that leads to heat exchanger failure.

A power flush at the point when cold radiator bottoms first appear costs ยฃ350โ€“ยฃ600. A heat exchanger replacement after sludge damage costs ยฃ600โ€“ยฃ1,200, and on an older boiler, typically means full replacement. Address radiator faults promptly โ€” the cost of acting is always a fraction of the cost of waiting.

Why This Matters For You

Whole-System Thinking

We don't just fix the symptom โ€” we diagnose the cause. A cold radiator is always a signal from the system; we address the underlying reason, not just the visible result.

Protects Your Boiler

Sludge-causing radiator cold spots will eventually damage your boiler's heat exchanger if not addressed. Treating radiator faults promptly is one of the most effective ways to protect your boiler investment.

Gas Safe Registered

All Kamdem HomeTech engineers are Gas Safe registered (Reg: 559988), covering all central heating and gas-connected radiator work to the required legal standard.

Same-Day Replacements Available

We carry standard radiator sizes on our vans. In most cases, we can supply and fit a replacement radiator in a single visit โ€” no waiting for parts delivery.

System Balancing Expertise

Correct system balancing โ€” ensuring every radiator receives the right flow โ€” is a skilled process that significantly improves comfort and reduces gas consumption. We balance systems accurately rather than guessing.

Fixed Price โ€” No Surprises

All radiator work is quoted at a fixed price before starting. You know what you're paying before we begin.

Frequently Asked Questions

My radiator is cold at the top but warm at the bottom โ€” what does that mean?
Cold at the top, warm at the bottom indicates trapped air in the radiator. This is resolved by bleeding the radiator using the bleed valve (usually a small square-headed valve at the top corner of the radiator). If you're not sure how to do this safely, or if the problem returns after bleeding, call us โ€” we'll bleed all the radiators in the property and investigate why air is entering the system.
My radiator is cold at the bottom but warm at the top โ€” is that different?
Yes. Cold spots at the bottom of a radiator indicate sludge (black iron oxide magnetite) that has settled in the base of the radiator, blocking the lower portion. This cannot be resolved by bleeding. A power flush is required to remove the sludge from the system.
One radiator in my house is completely cold even though the heating is on โ€” why?
A completely cold radiator while others in the system are heating normally is usually caused by a failed or stuck thermostatic radiator valve (TRV), a blocked lockshield valve, a sludge blockage severe enough to prevent all flow, or โ€” less commonly โ€” a detached or broken valve head. Our engineer will diagnose the cause and carry out the appropriate repair.
Do I need to drain the whole system to replace a radiator?
In most cases, no. We use isolation valves to isolate the individual radiator โ€” closing off the TRV and lockshield valves before removal. This means only the radiator itself needs draining, not the whole system. Where isolation valves are corroded or non-functional, we may need to partially drain the system, but we'll explain this before starting.
Can you add a radiator to a room that currently has no heating?
Yes. We install additional radiators โ€” including running new pipework from the nearest convenient connection point โ€” across Greater Manchester. Contact us for a survey and fixed-price quote.
My TRV keeps sticking โ€” is it worth replacing or should I replace the whole radiator?
In the vast majority of cases, replacing the TRV head (or the full TRV valve body if it's corroded) is the correct and economical approach. We carry TRVs for all standard radiator valve thread sizes. The radiator itself is rarely the problem and replacement is only recommended when the radiator itself is damaged, badly corroded, or significantly undersized for the room.
How do I know if I need balancing or power flushing?
If your radiators heat unevenly โ€” some rooms too hot, some too cold โ€” and the radiators themselves are fully hot when you feel them, balancing is the likely solution. If multiple radiators have cold spots at the bottom, or if the system is slow to heat, a power flush is more likely the right intervention. Our engineer will diagnose correctly on-site.
Do you replace heated towel rails as well as standard radiators?
Yes. We replace and install heated towel rails โ€” including both dual-fuel (central heating with electric element) and central-heating-only versions โ€” in bathrooms and kitchens across Greater Manchester.
