Central Heating Power Flushing: What It Is, What It Does, and Do You Need It?
If your radiators are cold at the bottom, your boiler is noisy, or your heating takes a long time to warm up, your central heating system may have accumulated sludge and corrosion debris. A power flush may restore it to full efficiency.
What Is Power Flushing?
Power flushing is a specialist process where a high-velocity, low-pressure pumping unit is connected to your central heating system. A cleaning solution is circulated through the system to loosen and remove magnetite sludge, rust, limescale, and other debris from radiators, the boiler heat exchanger, and pipework.
Signs Your System Needs a Power Flush
- Radiators are cold at the bottom but warm at the top
- Some radiators don’t heat up at all
- Boiler makes banging or kettling noises
- System takes a long time to reach operating temperature
- Dark, discoloured water when bleeding radiators
- New boiler installed in an older system
What Does Power Flushing Involve?
The process typically takes a full day for an average 8-10 radiator system. A magnetic filter inhibitor is added after the flush to prevent future sludge build-up. A system inhibitor is also added to protect against corrosion.
