How to Prepare Your Boiler and Heating System for Winter in Greater Manchester

In Greater Manchester, heating systems work harder than almost anywhere else in England. Preparing your boiler and central heating before the heating season starts can prevent winter breakdowns and keep your energy bills under control.

Book an Annual Boiler Service

If your boiler hasn’t been serviced in the last 12 months, book a service in September or October before the heating season starts. A Gas Safe engineer (Reg: 1000111) will check the boiler for safety and efficiency, identify any failing components, and top up the inhibitor in the system.

Bleed Your Radiators

Cold patches at the top of radiators indicate trapped air. Use a radiator key to release the air from each radiator, working from the ground floor up. Check the boiler pressure after bleeding and repressurise if needed.

Check Boiler Pressure

Most combi boilers operate at 1-1.5 bar when cold. If the pressure gauge reads below 1 bar, the system needs repressurising. Your boiler manual will explain how to do this safely.

Lag Your Pipes

Pipes in loft spaces, garages, and unheated outbuildings are vulnerable to freezing. Pipe lagging is inexpensive and quick to install and can prevent costly burst pipe emergencies in January and February.

Test Your Thermostat

Turn the heating on briefly in early autumn to check all radiators are heating correctly and the thermostat is responding as expected.
