What Is a Gas Safe Registered Engineer and Why Does It Matter?
In the UK, it is illegal for anyone to carry out gas work unless they are on the Gas Safe Register. Gas Safe registration is the legally recognised qualification scheme for gas engineers, replacing CORGI registration in 2009.
What Is the Gas Safe Register?
The Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers who are legally permitted to work on gas appliances and pipework in the UK. It is managed by Capita Gas Registration and Ancillary Services Ltd under appointment by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
What Work Requires a Gas Safe Engineer?
- Boiler installation, repair, and servicing
- Gas fire installation and servicing
- Gas cooker and hob installation
- Gas pipe installation and repair
- Landlord Gas Safety Checks (CP12)
- Any other work on gas appliances or pipework
Why Does It Matter?
Unsafe gas work is responsible for carbon monoxide poisoning deaths, fires, and explosions every year in the UK. Carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless — you cannot detect it without an alarm. Only a qualified, registered gas engineer has the training and equipment to work safely on gas appliances.
How to Check a Gas Engineer Is Registered
You can check any engineer’s Gas Safe registration at gassaferegister.co.uk or by calling 0800 408 5500. You can also ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card, which shows their name, photo, and the types of appliance they are qualified to work on.
